Tripura: Parents Sold Their Girl Child for Rs. 650

26th September 2016:  Sources revealed that a tribal girl child age of 2 years old from a remote area of Dhalai district, Gandacherra, Tripura was sold by her parents on 18th September.girl-child-sold

It was reported in a local newspaper that this innocent girl child was sold for only Rs. 650 because of a financial crisis and the parents were unable to take up the expenses for their baby. After inquiry, it was found that this tribal couple belongs to a very poor family in the backward area, and they belong to BPL category.

Sudip Roy Barman, an MLA OF Trinamool Congress, with distress talks about this humiliating incident. He says that the girl was sold first at Kamalpur area in the same district.

In this view, Barman further added saying ” A child was sold by her parents to earn their livelihood, and this is a sorry state of affairs. Though the parents have been arrested, the kid hasn’t yet been recovered. The people are dying because of poverty. This Government in such a callous mood that they are least bothered, rather they are busy trying to suppress these facts and figures.”

Barman, in concern over this pathetic incident, highlights the means of livelihood led by poor tribals. He said that the poor tribals had to survive their live struggling without sufficient food and adequate means of living.

After the investigation, it was reported that a girl child was sold by her parents Harita Tripura (mother) and Charan Tripura (stepfather) to Rita Chakma.

Bhaskar Das Gupta, SDM of Gandacherra added saying ” The child was handed over with mutual consent and on a humanitarian ground for education purpose.”

On inquiry by SDM and Jhutan Jamatia, officer-in-charge of a local police station they recovered the child at Abhoynagar area at Agartala, which is 180 km from the child’s village and she was handed over to her parents.

A similar incident took place at Munda Basti in ADC village at khowai District area that a tribal couple was bound to sell their newly born baby for just Rs. 4,500 as they couldn’t effort to rear their baby.
